Everton have sacked manager Sean Dyche following a dismal run of form that has seen the Toffees claim just one win in their last 11 Premier League games.
The decision leaves the Merseyside club teetering a point above the relegation zone in 16th place.
Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman are set to take temporary charge of the team for Thursday evening’s FA Cup third-round clash against Peterborough.
Dyche, 53, was appointed Everton boss in January 2023, tasked with steering the club away from relegation. He succeeded, securing Premier League survival with a crucial final-day victory over Bournemouth. In the 2023-24 season, despite an eight-point deduction for breaching the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules, Dyche led Everton to a 15th-place finish.
This season, while the Toffees have shown defensive solidity with seven clean sheets, they have struggled offensively, managing just 15 goals—the second-lowest tally in the league, ahead of only bottom-placed Southampton. Their attacking woes were exemplified in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth, where Everton failed to register a shot on target, marking their eighth league loss of the season.
Dyche’s departure coincides with significant changes at Everton. The club, playing their final season at Goodison Park before moving to their new Bramley-Moore Dock stadium, was recently taken over by the US-based Friedkin Group in a £400m deal.
While Everton’s defensive organization under Dyche was commendable, the lack of goals ultimately cost him his job. The club now faces a critical period, with Baines and Coleman entrusted to stabilize the team ahead of an impending managerial appointment.
