According to Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph, Scottish club Celtic have initiated negotiations with Sevilla over a potential loan deal for Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho.
Discussions are in the early stages, but Celtic are eager to secure the 28-year-old Nigerian forward on an initial five-month loan, with an option to buy.
The Scottish champions view Iheanacho as a potential replacement for Kyogo Furuhashi, who recently completed a move to French side Rennes.
Iheanacho has struggled to make an impact at Sevilla since joining on a free transfer from Leicester City last summer. He is yet to score in nine La Liga appearances and could be open to a move away from Spain in search of more playing time.
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers, who previously worked with Iheanacho at Leicester, is said to be a key factor in the club’s pursuit of the forward.
Earlier in January, Iheanacho turned down a move to Greek club Panathinaikos, opting to wait for a more suitable offer. His agent also dismissed reports linking him to Egyptian club Al-Ahly, stating there had been no contact.
With the transfer window deadline fast approaching, Celtic are expected to ramp up talks in the coming days as they seek to strengthen their attacking options.
