Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso tipped Bayern Munich as the favourite to win the 2024/25 Bundesliga title, despite Leverkusen’s remarkable league and cup double last season.

Speaking ahead of Friday’s Bundesliga season opener against Borussia Moenchengladbach, Alonso said, “For me, the favourites are Bayern, that’s clear.”

Leverkusen clinched their first-ever Bundesliga title last season, ending Bayern’s 11-year reign and leaving them trophyless for the first time since 2011-12. However, Alonso emphasized that Leverkusen’s primary goal is to secure a top-four finish, stating, “That’s realistic—we have a good squad.”

Bayern Munich has been active in the transfer market, bringing in new coach Vincent Kompany along with players like Michael Olise, Joao Palhinha, and Hiroki Ito. Meanwhile, Leverkusen, who have remained unbeaten in Germany since May 2023, kicked off the new season by defeating Stuttgart on penalties in the German Super Cup after a 2-2 draw.

Reflecting on Leverkusen’s historic unbeaten Bundesliga campaign and German Cup victory, Alonso said, “Last year was really nice… but we’re starting from scratch again.” He stressed the importance of earning points through strong performances, acknowledging that every game will be challenging, including the upcoming derby against Gladbach.

The only player unavailable for the match is Argentina midfielder Exequiel Palacios, who is sidelined with a knee injury.
