Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma has underscored the necessity for Nigeria to confront and overcome the major challenges threatening its unity and progress.
Speaking at the 2024 public lecture of the Yoruba Tennis Club in Lagos, Uzodimma addressed the theme, ‘Where Are the Nigerians? A Discourse on Patriotism and Citizenship.’
During the address, the governor emphasised that rekindling patriotism and fostering national pride are essential for Nigeria’s development.
He highlighted the need for good governance, national unity, and substantial investment in the country’s infrastructure and human capital.
“I deeply desire to see Nigeria rise to become not only the greatest country in Africa but possibly in the world,” Uzodinma declared.
“History shows that many nations have rapidly achieved greatness, and I firmly believe that if we take the right steps, Nigeria can do the same.”

Uzodimma stressed that restoring patriotism is a collective responsibility that requires a fundamental change in attitudes and behaviours across all sectors of society.
“From government offices to the streets, from urban centres to rural areas, we must all work together to instill a sense of national pride and dedication to our country’s advancement,” he said.
He pointed out that while the challenges facing Nigeria are significant, they are not insurmountable.
Addressing these issues directly—by promoting good governance, enhancing unity, investing in education, tackling economic problems, and celebrating national identity—can reignite the spirit of patriotism among Nigerians.
“We must also reflect on the role of merit in our public and private lives,”
Uzodinma added, “How often are young people hired based on their abilities rather than their connections or background?”
The governor called to action, encouraging all Nigerians to actively participate in the nation’s journey towards greatness.
Quoting John Kennedy, he called on all Nigerians to commit themselves to service and sacrifice.
“And so, my fellow Nigerians: ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country.”
