prescoIn what could be termed as a landmark achievement for the agro-industrial sector of the Nigerian economy, the Federal Government and Edo State government, in association with Presco Oil plc, on Monday commissioned a N2 billion bio-gas plant as part of strategies to addressing Presco Oil’s power generation problem.

BusinessDay reports that the plant, which is expected to save over 1 million litres of fossil fuels, was commissioned by the Edo State governor, Adams Oshiomhole, in company of the minister of trade and investment, Olusegun Aganga, and the deputy governor of Delta State, Amos Utuama.

The largest waste-to-energy project in the West African sub-region was the first to be implemented with the PAIF loan the company got from the Federal Government.

The green-energy project embarked on by Presco Oil in 2011 is geared towards reducing ground pollution by treating the waste water and reducing air pollution by reducing burning of fossil fuels.

In his address of welcome, the managing director of Presco, Uday Pilani, said the bio-gas plant was co-funded by Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) through the Power and Aviation Intervention Fund (PAIF loan) of N1 billion, saying the company expected that the project will save over 1 million litres of fossil fuel, diesel and kerosene per annum, noting that the usage of bio-methane greatly reduces air pollution.

He posited that the bulk of the company’s electromotive energy requirements will be about 85 percent produced by the 2.5 megawatts steam turbine, which will run on steam produced from solid wastes of the mill.

He disclosed that the bio-gas, which contains about 56 percent methane, was already being used to fire the package boiler and also as bi-fuel with diesel in the diesel generators.
