Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has reportedly emerged as a leading candidate for the Borussia Dortmund managerial role following the dismissal of Nuri Sahin.
Sahin was sacked after a dismal run of form that included a 2-1 Champions League loss to Bologna, marking Dortmund’s fourth consecutive defeat in all competitions.
The German club has managed just one win in their last nine games, leaving them 10th in the Bundesliga and 20 points behind leaders Bayern Munich.

Reports indicate that Ten Hag, who parted ways with Manchester United in October 2024, is on Dortmund’s shortlist for the vacant position. However, the Dutch coach is reportedly hesitant to take on the role midway through the season.
According to Sky Sports News, Ten Hag is prioritising a long-term contract and requires Manchester United to settle his severance package before considering a move.
“Erik ten Hag is not expected to replace Sahin in the short term,” the report noted. “Roger Schmidt, another candidate, also has reservations about Dortmund’s decision-making structure.”
Dortmund’s sporting director, Lars Ricken, acknowledged the difficulty of parting ways with Sahin but stressed the necessity of the decision.
“We greatly value Nuri Sahin and his work,” Ricken said in a statement. “However, after four defeats in a row and given our current position in the Bundesliga, we have unfortunately lost faith in achieving our sporting objectives.”
In the interim, Dortmund’s U19 coach Mike Tullberg will take charge, starting with Saturday’s Bundesliga fixture against Werder Bremen.
The club now faces a crucial period as they seek a permanent manager capable of reversing their fortunes in both domestic and European competitions.
