Nigerian striker Kelechi Iheanacho has returned to England, completing a loan move to Championship side Middlesbrough from Sevilla. The 28-year-old forward, who previously enjoyed successful spells with Manchester City and Leicester City, will spend the remainder of the season with the Teesside club.
Iheanacho‘s time in Spain was short-lived, making just nine appearances and scoring three goals for Sevilla after joining them on a free transfer from Leicester City in July 2024. A statement from Middlesbrough confirmed the loan agreement: “Nigerian international Kelechi Iheanacho has joined the club on loan until the end of the season. The former Manchester City and Leicester City marksman joins from La Liga side Sevilla.”
Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick expressed his delight at securing Iheanacho’s services. Speaking to Sky Sports, Carrick said, “Obviously delighted Kelechi is joining us. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to be in time for tonight, but he’ll be an important player for us, have a big impact. We have got some good attacking players. We’ll have a good week’s training and settle everyone down again before we go again.”
Iheanacho is expected to make his debut for Middlesbrough against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Wednesday, February 12th.
Iheanacho’s career began at Manchester City during the 2015/16 season, where he won the Football League Cup.
He moved to Leicester City in August 2017 and played a key role in their FA Cup triumph in the 2020/21 season, scoring four goals in the competition.
