Garnacho-Nkunku swap deal gains momentum

A sensational swap deal involving Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho and Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku could be on the horizon as the January transfer window nears its close.

Manchester United and Chelsea are reportedly in discussions regarding the potential swap, with both clubs looking to resolve squad imbalances and navigate financial pressures. Garnacho, the 20-year-old Argentine winger, has attracted interest from Napoli and Chelsea, while French forward Nkunku is said to be open to departing Stamford Bridge this month.

According to ESPN, Garnacho’s preference would be to move to Chelsea if he is forced to leave Old Trafford. United manager Ruben Amorim, however, refused to rule out the possibility of the player staying:
“I don’t know what will happen. Let’s focus on the team and the players that we have here. Anything can happen until the window closes,” Amorim said after United’s recent game.

Meanwhile, Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has also hinted at potential departures, including Nkunku, who has struggled for consistent game time. “They are top players,” Maresca said when discussing Nkunku and Joao Felix. “Most of the time, we only play with one attacking midfielder. I am not saying they will leave, but anything is possible.”

Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg revealed on X (formerly Twitter) that Manchester United and Chelsea are seriously considering the swap. Plettenberg stated, “Manchester United have now seriously entered the race for Christopher Nkunku. The swap involving Garnacho and Nkunku has been discussed, but no final decision has been made.”

Nkunku, valued at around £60m to £70m, remains a top target for United, whose interest dates back to his RB Leipzig days. While Bayern Munich has been linked with Nkunku, United’s willingness to offer Garnacho as part of the deal could give them the edge.

With both clubs expected to have a busy end to the transfer window, fans will be watching closely to see if this blockbuster swap becomes a reality.
