Amorim accepts responsibility for Man United's slump

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has clarified his recent remark that his side are “the worst team” in the club’s history, acknowledging that the comment was more about his own performance than his players.

Following the club’s 3-1 defeat to Brighton on Sunday, which marked their sixth loss in the last nine Premier League matches, Amorim took responsibility for the team’s poor form.

The team currently sits in 13th place in the Premier League and will face Scottish giants Rangers in the Europa League on Thursday, where they remain in a strong position to advance to the knockout stages.

Addressing his post-match comments at a pre-match press conference, the former Sporting Lisbon boss said, “I was talking more about me than the players. I also mentioned that I was not helping my players, and if you look around, every time I speak, I never blame the players for not being good enough.” Amorim added that he sometimes struggles to hide his frustration but clarified that his comments were made in a different tone to his players in the dressing room.

The 39-year-old manager emphasized that his side is struggling with nerves and anxiety, particularly when playing at home, with recent losses making it more difficult to regain confidence. “If we don’t concede the first goal, like in the fourth minute, I think that will change the game. We need to score the first one,” Amorim said.

Former United captain Harry Maguire, also speaking at the press conference, called on the players to take responsibility for their poor performances. “We’ve got to look at ourselves as an individual, that’s what I do. I think about how I can help this team improve,” Maguire said.

Amorim also dismissed questions regarding the potential sale of winger Alejandro Garnacho, who has been linked with moves to Napoli and Chelsea during the January transfer window, urging the focus to remain on the upcoming game. “Let’s focus on the game. Our players are here to play, and we need to improve and win games,” he stated.
