Adewuyi Adewale, the acting auditor-general, of Lagos State, has reiterated the importance of continuous training and retraining of the state’s auditors, saying it is the only way to deliver effective and efficient service.
Adewale made the assertion at a two-day workshop organised by the office of the state auditor-general, themed, ‘Developing Result-Driven Audit Work Programs’.
The training was facilitated by Olatinji Fanifosi & Co. and targeted auditors in grade levels 10 to 14, who are considered the engine and livewire of the auditor general’s office.
The two-day workshop focused on the role of audit and audit evidence; the development of audit objectives, and building audit steps.
According to the acting auditor-general, auditors who are not properly trained can’t be useful to the service because auditing is about knowledge.
“We chose this topic because we know you cannot carry out the work of audit without having effective programmes for audit objectives. Audit programmes are important in carrying out our work,” Adewale said.

He said without the proper training of the auditors, the office of the auditor-general may not be able to effectively do its work.
“That is why we have chosen that topic; that is why we are training this level of auditors,” Adewale said.
Olatunji Fanifosi, principal partner, Olatunji Fanifosi & Co, Chartered Accountants, said the workshop was to train auditors in the office of the state auditor-general.
According to him, auditing has now become more scientific, hence the need to build the capacity of the auditors towards developing audit work programmes to deliver on their line of duties.
“If you don’t train them, you won’t blame them. I’ll be happy to see my colleagues (auditors) getting the knowledge imparted to them and being able to impart it to others to replicate it in their line of duties.
Olalekan Salaudeen, assistant director, audit, office of the state auditor-general, said that the auditors needed the training to deliver effectively on the job.
