Inside details of how FilmOne selects box office ranking

Filmone Entertainment, Zeb Ejiro Productions, Dioni Visions, partner to make sequel of Domitilla

FilmOne Entertainment, a Nigerian film production and distribution company, has provided detailed selection criteria for box office performance ranking.

This latest information is in response to claims of inaccuracies in actors’ performance rankings by Temple Company.

The Temple Company, in a statement signed by Femi Salawu, Head of Public Affairs and Media Relations, released on February 4, 2024, highlighted significant oversights in the “Highest Grossing Female in a Supporting Role” category in the Nigeria Box Office Rankings 2024 by FilmOne Entertainment, published on January 8, 2025.

In direct response to the Temple company’s claims, FilmOne addressed the recent inquiries about the and provided the following clarifications.

First, to qualify as a performer in any category, the individual must have appeared in one or more films released in cinemas that grossed at least 20 million Naira within the eligibility period (January 1st to December 31st of the relevant year).

Secondly, to be considered a lead performer, the individual must be the designated lead in the films in question. Finally, two male and two female supporting performers are selected in each category, with validation from the producers and executive producers of the film.

According to the distributors, the film’s executive producers validate the selections and finalize based on standardized industry metrics.

The statement specifically criticised the misrepresentation of Bisola Aiyeola‘s contributions, emphasising that her significant role as Madam Bassey in ‘Everybody Loves Jenifa’ was omitted from her box office aggregation, despite her compelling performances in multiple successful productions like, ‘Ajosepo’, ‘Muri, and Ko’.

The statement issued by FilmOne reaffirmed the integrity and credibility of its recently published Nigeria Box Office Rankings 2024 and says that The Nigeria Box Office Rankings are developed through a structured data-driven process that evaluates box office performance, screen time, and the overall impact of talent contributions in films.

According to FilmOne, since 2020, the Nigerian Box Office Yearbook has served as a definitive industry resource, consistently providing transparent, data-driven insights that filmmakers, investors, and stakeholders rely on.

“Working with our data partners, Comscore, and the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN), FilmOne ensures that The Nigeria Box Office Rankings are developed through a structured data-driven process that evaluates box office performance, screen time, and the overall impact of talent contributions in films,” the statement reads.

The company encourages all stakeholders to engage with verified data and uphold the standards that foster credibility within the thriving Nigerian film industry.
