Rivers-MAN ends primary, secondary math’s Olympiad

The Mathematical Association of Nigeria (MAN), Rivers State chapter, commonly known as RIVERS-MAN, has ended its 2015 Mathematics Olympiad for primary and secondary schools in Rivers State.

The Olympiad is an annual mathematics competition for the primary, junior and senior secondary schools, with the aim of stimulating and improving their achievements and interests in mathematics among students in the state.

This year’s edition had 208 young mathematicians in participation, with Ojugo Elvis, a private candidate, and Nwafor Kenechukwu of Madonna Model Secondary School, Port Harcourt, emerging as winners of the senior secondary category.

Meanwhile, Olisa Kenechukwu and Okoronkwo Excel, both of the Federal Government College Port Harcourt won in the junior secondary category. While Chibuokem Dozie Okwuchi of Precious Stones Montessori School, Port Harcourt, and Furo Tamunosiki Favour of Kings Montessori Nursery and Primary School, Okrika, emerged winners at the primary school category.

Winners of the quiz, according to the association, will emerge today (Tuesday) after the Computer Based Test (CBT) quiz competition, which will hold during the RIVERS-MAN Summer Workshop.

For the moment, mathematicians are today, Tuesday, August 4, gathered for the 2nd Mathematics Summer Workshop organised by RIVERS-MAN in Port Harcourt.

According to Bada Abubakar, chairman, 2015 Summer Workshop committee, in a chat with BusinessDay, this year’s workshop is an improvement from last year’s, as this year’s event has been extended to be a two-day programme holding August 4 – 5, 2015.‬‪

Abubakar said this year’s workshop, which has the theme: ‘Mathematics Made Easy and More User-friendly in the 21st Century,’ “is aimed at proving that mathematics is all around us, and everybody is a mathematician.”

The two-day workshop holds at the Rivers State College of Arts and Science, Rumuola, Port Harcourt, and would also have a mathematics clinic for students on the second day of the programme.

Other attractions include exhibition, raffle draw, quick question and answer corner, and RIVERS-MAN blue carpet and induction of participants, among others. ‬‪

The workshop topics will include Arithmetic, Algebra, Probability and Calculus.‬‪

Promise Mebine of the Mathematics Department, Niger Delta University, Bayelsa State, is the lead paper presenter, while His Grace, Ignatius Kattey, Dean Emeritus of Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion, is to chair this year’s workshop.‬‪
