Mastercard Foundation gets new board member

The Mastercard Foundation, an international non-governmental organisation, has appointed Carole Wainaina as a new member of its board of directors, effective July 2, 2024.

With 35 years of experience spanning multinationals and multilateral organisations, Wainaina is currently serving as Senior Advisor to the Chief Executive Officer at Africa50 and non-executive director at various organisations, according to a statement.

“I am delighted to welcome Wainaina to our board of directors. The Mastercard Foundation is executing a bold strategy to create economic opportunities for young people in Africa and Indigenous youth in Canada. Carole’s experience in the public and private sectors, global networks, and knowledge of the African continent will be invaluable,” Zein Abdalla, chair of the board of directors at the Mastercard Foundation said in the statement.

Wainaina expressed her enthusiasm for joining the Mastercard Foundation’s Board.

“I look forward to working with a dynamic team advancing education and financial inclusion to create opportunities for young people, build stronger communities, and contribute to more inclusive economies. This important work benefits all of us, and I am pleased to contribute to the Foundation’s impact in Africa and Canada,” she said

The Mastercard Foundation is an international non-governmental organisation established by Mastercard in 2006. The organisation, which is based in Toronto, Ontario, has supported work in 49 countries. In 2018, Mastercard Foundation shifted to a specific focus on Africa, through its Young Africa Works strategy.

It works with visionary organizations to enable young people in Africa and in Indigenous communities in Canada to access dignified and fulfilling work.
