Africanews, a multilingual independent and pan African cable broadcast news outfit has been launched in Africa. It is based in the Republic of Congo broadcasting in English and French.
The objective of Africanews, a subsidiary of Euronews is to change African negative narratives and give the continent the rightful place in the world of news.
“Much more than a mere ‘window’ on Africa, Africanews has created a fully-fledged Pan-African network with editorial decision taken in Africa for an African audience”, said Michael Peters, CEO of Euronews and Africanews.
He told journalists across Africa through Skype network yesterday that Africanews which has employed correspondents across Africa would be financed through advertising and distribution. “Africanews adheres to the same editorial charter as its European sister channel, Euronews”.
He assured that Africanews is an independent African media outlet of no political or ideological colour. Unlike the continent’s other channels, Africanews, modeled on its sister operation Euronews, will never be the mouthpiece of a single viewpoint, party or nation.
On the choice of Congo as headquarters of the station, Peters said it is because of the presence of fibre optic and readiness of the country to host the station.
