While Nigeria wallows in the quota system over recruitment, Bank of Kigali, Rwanda has hired the services of Obinna Ukwuani – a Nigerian – to lead its digital innovation growth as Chief Digital Officer.
Ukwuani will replace Regis Rugemanshuro who was appointed to head Rwanda Social Security Board in February.
A former executive of Paystack, Ukwuani in 2017 founded NESA by Makers, a Lagos-based platform that trains people on web development and other soft skills.
The position among other things involves leading the Digital Factory division for product innovation and development in digital banking. Obinna commenced work in June.
Ukwuani grew up in Washington DC, graduating with honours in high school. He has Ukwuani has a degree in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He later returned to Nigeria to help develop Nigeria’s digital skills industry.
He founded Exposure Robotics Academy in 2011 where STEM programs were taught to secondary school pupils. The academy coached 113 students in 17 states across Nigeria between 2011 and 2014. many of the students went on to gain scholarships into universities in the United States.
He launched the Makers Robotics Academy in 2018 in Rwanda. The first robotics bootcamp in the East African nation, a programme linking Secondary school students in Rwanda with coaching from MIT robotics students.
