Nigerian striker Victor Boniface continued his scoring streak, netting the decisive goal as Bayer Leverkusen rallied from 2-0 down to defeat Koln 3-2 after extra-time in Wednesday’s DFB-Pokal quarter-final clash.
Boniface, who also found the net in Leverkusen’s 3-1 league win against Hoffenheim on Sunday, delivered the decisive blow in the 98th minute, volleying home a cross from Alejandro Grimaldo to seal the victory.
The 24-year-old Nigerian came off the bench in the 76th minute and made his presence felt, scoring his team’s third goal to complete a remarkable turnaround.

Koln had taken control of the match with Damion Downs opening the scoring in first-half stoppage time before Linton Maina doubled the lead in the 54th minute. However, Patrik Schick pulled one back for Leverkusen in the 61st minute and then struck again deep into stoppage time to force extra time.
Boniface, who has now registered 10 goals and one assist in 17 appearances this season, ensured Leverkusen’s fightback was complete with his crucial strike early in extra time.
Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso hailed his team’s resilience.
“It was a very tough game against a strong opponent, but we showed great character. It may not have been our best game, but we played with heart and fought until the last minute.”
The victory extends Leverkusen’s impressive domestic campaign, while Koln’s best cup run since 2010 comes to an end. The visitors will now shift focus to their push for Bundesliga promotion.
