Taiwo Awoniyi to stay at Nottingham Forest despite limited playing time

Despite a season plagued by limited game time and only one goal, Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi is reportedly set to remain at Nottingham Forest, according to BBC. Interest from Everton and West Ham had fueled speculation of a potential move during the January transfer window.

Awoniyi, 27, has struggled to secure a regular starting position under manager Nuno Espírito Santo, often finding himself behind Chris Wood in the pecking order. His Premier League appearances this season total 19, but only two have been starts, with the remaining 17 coming off the bench. This translates to a mere 248 minutes of action.

While Everton and West Ham were reportedly keen to acquire the former Liverpool forward, Forest have maintained their stance of not selling him this month. With the transfer window nearing its close, it appears Awoniyi will stay at the City Ground and fight for his place in the squad.

The BBC reports, “Nottingham Forest have not considered selling striker Taiwo Awoniyi this month and it is likely to be a quiet deadline day at The City Ground.” They added that Awoniyi, despite his single goal in 21 appearances, is considered a key backup to Chris Wood, who recently scored a hat-trick against Brighton.

Awoniyi will be hoping for increased playing time in the remainder of the season to improve his form and boost his chances of being called up to the Super Eagles for the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in March.
