Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho says third place on the English Premiership League table is not good enough and that everyone at the club must do better next season.
Mourinho also admitted that his side cannot shy away from the prospect of winning the EPL next season.
The Portuguese coach played down Chelsea’s chances of winning the title this season, often referring to his club as the ‘little horse’ in a three-way battle with Manchester City and Liverpool.
Chelsea finished third in the Premier League and went to the semi-finals of the Champions League, only to be knocked out by Spanish league-leaders Atletico Madrid.
“I have great belief in them [the players] and I think next season we can start day one and we can say without any kind of fears that we are there not to fight for the title, but to win it,” Mourinho reportedly said at Chelsea’s Player of the Season awards on Monday.
“It’s good to be back but it’s not good to finish third. I’m happy with the evolution, but I’m not happy with third. Next season we want to do better than we did. We have to do better, I have to do better, the players have to do better.”
Mourinho and Chelsea have already looked to strengthen their squad for next season, having reportedly agreed a deal to sign Atletico striker Diego Costa. The Spaniard, who has been selected in Vicente del Bosque’s preliminary squad for the World Cup next month, has scored 35 goals in La Liga this season, and could lift the title with Atletico this weekend.
Chelsea captain John Terry has also signed a one-year contract extension, after showing solid form all season long.
The club will no doubt strengthen further this summer, as Mourinho attempts to avoid the possibility of a second campaign back in London without silverware.
