Maresca plays down Chelsea interest in Garnacho

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has downplayed the Blues’ interest in Argentina forward Alejandro Garnacho amid rumours he could leave Manchester United in January.

Reports suggest Garnacho has emerged as a surprise transfer target for Chelsea as they look to strengthen their attacking options.

Although United is not actively trying to sell the winger, their financial situation might compel them to do so, especially with Napoli showing strong interest.

Antonio Conte is eager to replace Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who has joined PSG, with Garnacho, but Napoli has yet to meet United’s £54.8 million valuation.

Chelsea are reportedly intensifying their efforts to sign Garnacho, who has contributed eight goals and five assists for United this season – a tally surpassed only by Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo.

However, in his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s crucial Premier League clash at Manchester City, Maresca hinted at a lack of interest in acquiring another attacking player.

When questioned about the Garnacho links, the Blues head coach responded: “I’m content with our current options. Pedro Neto and Noni Madueke occupy the right side, while Jadon Sancho is on the left.

“We previously had Mykhailo Mudryk, but he’s no longer with us. Tyrique George is a promising young player who can contribute.”

Regarding potential January signings in general, he added: “We, along with the club’s sporting directors, are vigilant for any opportunities that may arise. We’ll assess the situation within the next 10 days.”

It’s believed Garnacho would favour a move to Chelsea over Napoli but is not actively pushing for an exit from Old Trafford, despite not being a regular starter under Ruben Amorim.

While one forward has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, two others are reportedly on their way out. Joao Felix and Christopher Nkunku are the subject of intense transfer speculation.
