Jannik Sinner powers into Australian Open semi-final with win over De Minaur

World number one Jannik Sinner advanced to the 2025 Australian Open semi-final with a commanding victory over Alex de Minaur at Rod Laver Arena. The Italian star cruised past the eighth seed 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 in a match that lasted under two hours.

Sinner, the defending champion, reached the Australian Open semi-finals for the third time. Despite health concerns during his last-16 match, where he admitted to feeling unwell in the intense heat, Sinner showed no signs of discomfort on a cooler Melbourne day.

The top seed will now face 21st-seeded American Ben Shelton, who secured his first Grand Slam semi-final appearance by defeating unseeded Lorenzo Sonego 6-4, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7/4). The clash winner will meet either 10-time champion Novak Djokovic or second seed Alexander Zverev in the final.

Sinner had a perfect record against De Minaur coming into the match, winning all nine of their previous encounters, and he maintained his dominance.

“Yesterday was a very easy day. I played just half an hour, 40 minutes with my coaches,” Sinner said when asked about his recovery. “When you’re young, you recover very fast.”

The home crowd cheered on De Minaur, but Sinner’s aggressive baseline play and precise ball-striking overwhelmed the Australian. De Minaur managed only four winners in the opening set and struggled to create opportunities throughout the match.

Sinner’s relentless performance saw him break for an early lead in each set. The second set took just 40 minutes, with De Minaur visibly frustrated by Sinner’s accuracy and power. The third set was no different, as Sinner closed out the match with two breaks of serve.

“Today, I felt like I was feeling everything,” Sinner said. “Days like this, when you break early in each set, make it a little bit easier.”

Sinner is seeking to defend his Australian Open title, having defeated Daniil Medvedev in last year’s final. The 22-year-old also clinched the US Open in 2024 and is aiming for his third Grand Slam crown.
