FIFA is reportedly set to distribute $1 billion in prize money for the expanded 2025 Club World Cup in the United States, a source told AFP. This sum significantly surpasses the prize money awarded for both the last Men’s and Women’s World Cups.

Despite limited details on funding, FIFA has secured major deals, including a broadcasting contract with British streaming service DAZN—reportedly worth around $1.05 billion—and sponsorship agreements with Coca-Cola, Bank of America, Hisense, and AB InBev.

For comparison, the 2022 FIFA Men’s World Cup in Qatar had a total prize pool of $440 million, while the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand offered $110 million. Meanwhile, UEFA’s expanded 36-team Champions League will distribute $2.66 billion this season.

The 32-team Club World Cup, set for June 14 to July 13, has drawn criticism, particularly in Europe, over concerns about player workload. The global footballers’ union FIFPro and the European Leagues association filed a complaint with the European Commission, accusing FIFA of overcrowding the football calendar. Some top players, including Ballon d’Or winner Rodri and Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, have hinted at the possibility of a strike.

Despite concerns, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) coach Luis Enrique welcomed the tournament, calling it an “extremely exciting competition” that “everyone wants to play in.”

The 2025 Club World Cup will feature 12 European teams, six from South America and four each from Asia, Africa, and North and Central America. Auckland City and Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami complete the lineup. Matches will be held at 12 venues across 11 U.S. cities, with the final set for MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, the host of the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
