Copa del Rey: Real Madrid survive Celta Vigo scare to reach quarterfinals

Real Madrid survived a late Celta Vigo fightback to secure a thrilling 5-2 victory after extra time, advancing to the Copa del Rey quarterfinals. Teenage sensation Endrick stole the spotlight with two goals, including a clever backheel to seal the win.

Fresh off a humiliating 5-2 El Clasico loss to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup, Madrid looked set for a straightforward win before two late Celta goals forced the game into extra time at the Santiago Bernabéu.

The home side initially appeared in control, with Kylian Mbappe scoring a spectacular opener before halftime. However, controversy surrounded the goal, as Celta’s players vehemently protested a missed penalty call after Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin seemingly fouled Williot Swedberg in the box. The referee waved play on, and Madrid capitalized with Mbappe slicing through Celta’s defence to finish clinically.

Vinicius Jr. doubled Madrid’s lead early in the second half, giving the hosts a comfortable cushion. But Celta’s Jonathan Bamba pulled one back late on, and in stoppage time, Marcos Alonso converted a penalty after Bamba was fouled, sending the game into extra time.

In the additional period, Endrick restored Madrid’s lead with a composed finish before Fede Valverde added a fourth with a powerful strike. Endrick completed the scoring with a stylish backheel, ensuring Madrid’s progress in an entertaining but nervy encounter.

“This is Madrid; you fight until the end to win,” Endrick said after the game. “It was a tough match, but we showed our determination, scored great goals, and came through.”

Despite the win, Madrid’s defensive vulnerabilities remain a concern for coach Carlo Ancelotti, as the team faced whistles from fans following their Super Cup disappointment.

Mbappe, however, provided a bright spot for the hosts. The former Paris Saint-Germain star continued his resurgence, impressing with his opening goal and dynamic play, which hinted at him finding his footing in the Spanish capital.

Madrid will now look forward to Monday’s draw, hoping to maintain momentum as they continue their quest for domestic silverware.
