Manchester United have agreed with the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT) for goalkeeper Andre Onana to delay his call-up for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) after their match against Tottenham Hotspur on January 14.
The 27-year-old Cameroon international will now be able to play in United’s FA Cup third-round tie against Wigan Athletic on Monday, January 8, before they welcome Spurs to Old Trafford six days later.
David Ornstein, The Athletic journalist, revealed this on his X (formerly known as Twitter) account on Wednesday night.
“Andre Onana will travel to the Africa Cup of Nations after Man Utd v Spurs on Jan 14. The goalkeeper will be available for Cameroon vs. Guinea on January 15. Amicable agreement reached between all parties to maximise club and country game time,|” Ornstein wrote on his X account.
Cameroon will begin their African Cup of Nations campaign against Guinea, meaning Onana will arrive on the Ivory Coast and be available to represent the Indomitable Lions in their opening match on January 15.
Man United signed Onana from Inter Milan last July because he had retired from national team duty and would not be going to AFCON, which was communicated to them.
He was persuaded by the Cameroonian Football Federation and other factors to return to the national team.
