In the annals of history, some names transcend time, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of those they touched. Prof. John Omoniyi Abiri, the Obapero of Abiri, was one such individual. His life was a tapestry of wisdom, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the upliftment of his community and the nation at large. As we reflect on his journey, we celebrate not just the man but the monumental legacy he leaves behind—a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations.

Born into the distinguished family of Pa Abraham Muyiwa Abiri in Ile-Ife, Prof. Abiri’s early years were marked by an insatiable thirst for knowledge and excellence. From his formative education at St. Phillips School and Oduduwa College in Ile-Ife, where he graduated with distinction in 1955, to his academic pursuits at the University College, Ibadan, and further studies in the United Kingdom, Prof. Abiri was a beacon of intellectual prowess. His academic achievements were not merely personal milestones; they were the foundation upon which he built a life dedicated to the service of others.

Prof. Abiri’s contributions to education in Nigeria are unparalleled. As a pioneer in the field, he played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s educational landscape. His tenure at the University of Ibadan, where he rose through the ranks to become an Associate Professor, and later at the University of Ilorin, where he was appointed a Professor at the age of 39 and the founding Dean of the Faculty of Education, was marked by visionary leadership and a commitment to academic excellence. He was a mentor to many, guiding countless students and colleagues, many of whom have themselves become distinguished scholars.

But Prof. Abiri was more than just an academic; he was a leader who understood the power of education to transform lives. His scholarly works, including the celebrated “Moremi: An Epic of Feminine Heroism,” are a testament to his deep understanding of culture, history, and the human condition. His tenure as the Resident Electoral Commissioner across four Nigerian states during the most widely adjudged fairest elections in Nigerian history further exemplified his dedication to the principles of fairness, integrity, and democracy.

In 2010, Prof. Abiri’s journey took on a new dimension when he was crowned the Obapero of Abiri, the paramount ruler and king of his hometown. This honour was not merely a title but a recognition of his lifelong service to his people. As a monarch, he led with wisdom and compassion, earning the love and respect of his subjects and other traditional rulers across Nigeria. His reign was marked by a commitment to Abiri town’s development and preserving its rich cultural heritage.

Prof. Abiri was a man of many titles—scholar, educator, leader, king—but above all, he was a man of the people. His humility, kindness, and dedication to the betterment of society were the hallmarks of his character. He was a benefactor to many, a mentor to more, and a father to those who had the privilege of knowing him personally. His life was a shining example of what it means to serve with dignity and honour.

As we bid farewell to this great elder statesman, we are reminded that his legacy is not confined to the pages of history or the accolades he received. It lives on in the hearts of those he touched, in the lives he transformed, and in the community he so dearly loved. His children include Akinniyi, Oluwabukola, Lillian-Jane Abiri, Oyedapo, Adebayo, Omowaleola, Adedotun, Oyekola and Oyewusi.

His accomplished son, Dr Oyekola Abiri, who is a renowned infectious disease professional and who is a blossom friend of mine, has pledged to carry forward his inspiring legacy through the establishment of a scholarship and foundation in his name, ensuring that his contributions to education and community development continue to inspire future generations.

Prof. John Omoniyi Abiri’s life was a testament to the power of education, the strength of leadership, and the enduring impact of service. As we remember him today, we do so with gratitude for the remarkable legacy he leaves behind—a legacy that will continue to shine brightly, guiding and inspiring all who follow in his footsteps.

Illustrious, Obapero of Abiri. Your life was a gift to the world, and your legacy will forever be a beacon of hope and inspiration. Dr Alim Abubakre
