The Yemisi Shyllon Museum of Art (YSMA), Pan-Atlantic University, Lagos, in collaboration with the Guild of Professional Fine Artists of Nigeria (GFA) and Kenna Partners, recently hosted a workshop titled “Empowering Artists: Navigating Legal and Contractual Issues in the Arts World”.
The first-of-its-kind workshop in Nigeria focused on copyright practices and intellectual property rights, underscoring their critical role in protecting artists, fostering innovation, and driving national development. Facilitators Okechukwu Ekweanya and Ifunanya Ikwueto highlighted the need for awareness and enforcement of art-specific agreements, stressing that overlooking these aspects not only short-changes artists but also stifles the creative sector’s economic potential.
At the core of discussions was the recognition of copyright as a valuable asset that secures legal rights and income opportunities for creators, regardless of physical ownership of the artwork.
Museum Director Jess Castellote reiterated YSMA’s commitment to empowering artists. “The creative economy is a driving force for innovation, cultural preservation, and economic growth. By equipping artists with knowledge of their rights, particularly around copyright, we aim to bridge a crucial gap that strengthens their careers and supports national development,” he said.
Senior Partner at Kenna Partners, Professor Fabian Ajogwu, emphasized the role of artists in preserving history and the necessity of protecting their rights. “Artists create value in society by documenting culture and identity. It is vital to know your rights, make informed decisions, and set clear terms in professional dealings,” Ajogwu stated.
GFA President George Edozie stressed that the workshop was more than an educational initiative—it was a call to action. “By protecting their intellectual property, artists ensure their creativity is respected and fairly rewarded, which, in turn, elevates the entire creative industry,” he said.
With about 30 artists in attendance, the workshop equipped participants with essential knowledge and tools to safeguard their intellectual property and build sustainable careers. Through initiatives like this, YSMA continues to position itself as a catalyst for empowering Nigeria’s art community, addressing systemic challenges, and leveraging creativity for socio-economic growth.
