A recent survey highlighting security incidents across Nigeria has identified major cities and highways as high-risk zones, highlighting areas prone to theft, attacks, and road hazards. This report sheds light on the country’s security landscape, offering critical insights for residents and travellers.
The report also highlighted that Eleme Junction in Port Harcourt, Shagamu Interchange in Lagos, and the Maiduguri-Damaturu Road were identified as major danger zones for theft, attacks, and road-related hazards.

Port Harcourt was described as the most perilous city, with respondents citing the Ihiala-Okigwe Road as a notorious hotspot. Maiduguri closely followed, with the Damaturu Forest and Daudu-Akeleku areas flagged for persistent security threats. The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway also ranked high for criminal activities.
The report underscored the “pressing need for improved security measures to safeguard travellers.”
It noted that kidnapping for ransom remains a significant threat, especially on the Port Harcourt-Warri route, which has now “surpassed the Abuja-Kaduna highway in danger levels.”

“The Makurdi-Jos route presents another troubling scenario, with a blend of youth gang violence and farmer-pastoral conflicts. These incidents often lead to roadblocks and attacks on motorists, highlighting systemic lapses in government security provisions,” the report added.
The findings emphasise the need for heightened awareness and precautionary measures when navigating these regions.

Maiduguri — 52 Incidents
Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, faces ongoing threats from insurgent groups. The region has been marked by severe instability due to conflicts and attacks on civilians, making it one of the most dangerous areas in Nigeria.

Lagos — 32 Incidents

Jos has experienced a rise in communal clashes and violent crimes, contributing to its designation as a dangerous hotspot. The city’s history of ethnic tensions exacerbates the security situation.

Calabar, known for its role as a tourism and trade hub, recorded 18 incidents. Security challenges on its highways and within urban areas remain a concern for residents and visitors.

Kano, a major commercial centre in northern Nigeria, also reported 18 incidents. The city’s crowded markets and busy transport hubs are frequent targets for theft and other security concerns.

Onitsha, a major trading city in southeast Nigeria, recorded 15 incidents. The city’s bustling markets and transport hubs often witness theft and related crimes, posing risks for traders and travellers.
