The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Osun State has destroyed an illegal mining site in Osun State. The operation, led by CC Igbalawole Sotiyo, the State Commandant took place on Friday, January 31, 2025, at the Sambisa area, Kajola, Atakumosa West Local Government area of the State.
This was disclosed by ASC Kehinde Adeleke, the spokesperson to Osun NSCDC, in a statement on Saturday. The Commandant said the illegal mining site was discovered through intelligence gathering and surveillance.
According to him, the suspect confessed to operating without the necessary licenses or authorization. The NSCDC boss then warned that it will continue to crack down on illegal mining activities, emphasizing its statutory responsibility to protect the country’s solid mineral resources and urging those involved in the act to desist.
During the operation, Sotiyo said several mining tools were destroyed, including draglines, pumping machines, and other equipment.
He said that a suspect was arrested and will be charged in court, stating that others fled the scene, abandoning their equipment, assuring that efforts are being made to arrest the fleeing suspects.
Sotiyo urged members of the public to provide information about any illegal mining activities in their environment to help make the state safe and put an end to environmental degradation and economic sabotage.
