Idi Mukhtar Maiha, minister of Livestock, has called for an upward review of the N10 billion capital allocation and N1.8 billion overhead budget.
The minister sought the review at a joint hearing meeting of the Senate and House of Reps committees on Livestock Development to defend the ministry’s 2025 budget proposal.
Maiha outlined the ministry’s budgetary allocations of N10 billion for capital projects and N1.8 billion for overheads, explaining the strategic distribution of capital projects across the six geopolitical zones, with a focus on livestock flashpoints.
“We have prioritised projects that address pressing sectoral challenges, including infrastructure for ranches, animal health services, and sustainable market corridors.

“While the fiscal envelope is limited, we are leveraging bilateral engagements and international grants to supplement our funding. Our goal is to attract local and foreign investments, create jobs, and establish a vibrant livestock industry,” Maiha said.
Responding to questions about the ministry’s roadmap, the minister revealed that the white paper on agency transitions was nearing completion.
“This document is critical for guiding our operations and setting a clear path forward. We are committed to finalising it promptly to ensure smooth transitions and effective implementation of our programs,” he said.
Meanwhile, Musa Mustapha, chairman of the Senate committee on livestock development, commended the ministry for its efforts, urging it to provide periodic progress updates on key challenges.
“This session has been interactive and enlightening. We recognise the foundational phase of this ministry, and how strong the structure becomes depends on how solid the foundation is.
“We expect you to provide regular reports on the challenges you are facing, especially in terms of accommodation and other pressing needs. These updates are essential to guide our interventions and ensure the ministry fulfils its purpose,” Mustapha stated.
