Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge: More centres on the way to ease e-tag registration

Big tech firms leave Yaba for Ikoyi on infrastructure need

In response to complaints bordering on delays, travel time and cost suffered by motorists wanting to register and obtain their e-tags for use on the Lekii-Ikoyi Link Bridge, the authorities of the Lekki Concession Company (LCC) say plans are now at advanced stage to open more centres.

The company, which is the concessionaire on both the Link Bridge and the Admiralty Toll Plaza on Lekki Epe Expressway, explained that the new centres, one of which will be in Ikeja, were meant to ease registration processes and to also make it convenient for applicants.

“We started with only three centres; now we have six and by next week we are adding three more centres and one of the centres will be in Ikeja,” said Yomi Omomuwasan, LCC’s managing director/CEO  at a media programme on Friday.

LCC, according to plan and in line with the cashless policy of the Lagos State government, commenced cashless payment at the iconic Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge on January 2, 2020, in which case only eTags, prepaid cards, contactless cards and payment vouchers are acceptable as means of payment.

Omomuwasan said the new policy was also aimed to address the gridlock experienced on the bridge as a result of cash payment, explaining that, with the e-payment system, the bridge could pass 20 vehicles per minute as against six vehicles when motorists had to pay with cash.

But the implementation of the policy has been experiencing some hiccups which Omomuwasan said are expected when a new policy is being put in place or being implemented.

He assured that all the complaints so far received from those who have applied for registration were being addressed. Besides increasing the number of registration and collection centres for e-tags, he said, they were also working on their Apps to make them more receptive and interactive.
