Kano set to review transportation policy

Kano state government says it is fashioning out a new public policy geared at tackling the various challenges impeding modern, efficient, and effective transportation systems in the state.

The need to conceive a new transportation policy is necessitated largely due to the increasing population, and the commercial status of the state.

Muhammad I. Diggol, Kano state Commissioner for Transportation, made this disclosure on Wednesday, while, briefing journalists in respect of a policy stakeholders consultation conference that the ministry is planning to hold.

Diggol said that the new policy is expected to ease access to places of work, education, health and other social amenities the quality of life suffers, and in addition to ensuring easy access to markets and industries, economic growth stagnates and poverty prevails.

“To address the transportation challenges, the Kano State Government is developing a State Transport Policy that will provide a framework for current and future transportation decisions Part of the processes for the development of transport policy will entail a stakeholder consultation to review the draft policy and where stakeholders are expected to make a contribution and constructive criticism on the draft document to enrich the draft document such that the final policy document will be implemented collectively.

“To achieve this objective, Kano State is organizing a 2-day stakeholder dialogue on the development of transport policy in Kano. The objective is to reposition the sector for optimum productivity.

“The policy, among other things, will serve as a working framework for overall transportation development and create an enabling environment for private sector participation in the state’s transportation economy.

“The transport policy will usher in a new dawn and renewed government efforts in the actualization of the vision and mission of transportation development.

“The vision and mission for the development of transportation in the Kano State Development Master Plan is “to provide good accessibility to socio-economic activities for all residents of Kano State within acceptable environmental standards that supports a modern multimodal transport system that satisfies the needs of the people of the state and also meets the standard of a world-class city.”, he explained.
