Fact check: Viral photo of ‘broken’ Dorman Long Bridge is old story

A viral photo of a ‘broken’ joint on Dorman Long Bridge near Ojuelegba in Lagos is an old story, BusinessDay finds.

The federal government had, in a statement on September 18, 2023, assured the motoring public that the bridge which connects Ikorodu Road to Western Avenue, was safe and structurally stable.

This assurance followed an inspection carried out by a team of engineers who certified the bridge safe, allaying fears earlier expressed by concerned Lagos residents that the bridge had cracks that could be dangerous.

Olukorede Kesha, the Federal Controller of Works, Lagos, led the Lagos State Field Headquarters Engineers on Monday, September 18, 2023, to inspect the bridge to ascertain the veracity of the claim by the concerned residents.

“During the inspection, it was discovered that this section of the bridge is in good condition as the bridge bearings at that location and all other locations along the bridge were noticed to be in healthy and serviceable conditions,” the controller assured.

She added that only a negligible portion of the parapet wall was found to be damaged and this did not affect the structural stability of the bridge.

To this end, she said, “We wish to inform the general public that the Dorman-long bridge is in good condition and fit for use. Thus, the general public should put their mind at rest and continue to enjoy the use of the bridge with peace of mind.”

Lagos residents are becoming, increasingly, apprehensive of cracks in any of the criss-crossing bridges in the metropolis and this fear derives from the fact that any major issue with any of the bridges leads to closure of the bridge, congestion and traffic gridlock that makes commuting a nightmare.
