Expert tasks media practitioners on good diet, healthy living

…as Navy donates office equipment to Cross River journalists

Kofoworola Belo-Osagie, media expert (Development Journalism) WSCIJ Report Women Fellow has encouraged Journalists in Nigeria to shun all activities that are unhealthy for their mental and physical health.

Mental health, according to her, has serious impacts on journalistic endeavours, therefore, adequate attention must be given to it as healthy journalists will perform optimally.

She added that, psychosocial wellbeing is paramount, saying journalists are prone to stress, owing to the nature of their responsibilities.

Belo-Osagie, who stated this at a day media personnel roundtable organized by the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ), in collaboration with Albarka 89.9 FM, and funded by the MacArthur Foundation, noted that journalists have to be wary of stress management, improve on healthy diet, have enough sleep and exercise.

Speaking on the theme, “Mind Matter: Mental Health and Psychosocial Wellbeing for Journalists,” she explained that “stress can cause High Blood Pressure.

“Workload, unhealthy practice, poor time management, digital overload, emotional suppress, mindless consumption, financial pressure and failure to have adequate sleep are contributing factors.

“What you eat inflicts stress and affect your mental health. To lower the noise; cut bad eating habits, maintain a healthy diet, eat more protein and nourishing meal, and sleep between 7-8 hours in a dark – cool room.

“Also, take break from sitting, offer yourself with living purpose to boost your mental health.”

Meanwhile, Rotimi Oderemi, Commodore and Commander, Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Victory, has donated a dozen of chairs to the Cross River State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) as palliatives to the dire need of a conducive working environment for members of the fourth estate of the realm.
Presenting the chairs to Archibong Bassey, Cahorman Cross ‘River State NUJ, Chairman at the Ernest Etim Bassey Press Centre in Calabar, Oderemi said the gesture was in recognition of the efforts of members of the Union in covering activities of NNS Victory and projecting the Unit in positive light.

“As part of our non-kinetic line of operation, NNS Victory, being a unit under ‘Operation Delta Sanity,’ thought it wise that we provide a token towards a more comfortable Secretariat for journalists in Cross River state.

“This is just a dozen. We will come back very soon to add more value to your Secretariat in our commitment to fostering greater collaboration with the NUJ”, he said.
