Following the announcement of Shoprite’s planned exit from its Kano branch, Deputy President of the Senate, Barau I. Jibrin, has initiated efforts to retain the supermarket chain.
Shoprite, citing challenging economic circumstances, declared its intention to leave the “Centre of Commerce” by January 2024.
The decision ignited mixed feelings among residents, as Shoprite has operated in Kano since 2014. Jibrin’s special adviser, Ismail Mudashir, stated in a statement issued on Monday that the Deputy President plans to meet with Shoprite’s management this week in Abuja.

‘’The Office of the Deputy President of the Senate has set machinery in place to halt the exit of Shoprite from Kano State. His Excellency, the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I Jibrin, CON, will meet with the company’s management this week to discuss the issue and hopefully resolve it.
‘’Yes, it is a pure business issue, but we will see how we can encourage them to rescind their decision and stay in Kano. As we all know, there are enormous business opportunities in Kano, the commercial nerve centre of northern Nigeria. At a time when we are scouting for investors, we will not fold our hands and allow them to leave,’’ he said.
