The Abia State Ministry of Environment has banned styrofoam, popularly known as ‘Take Away’.
This comes barely a week after the Lagos State Government took the same decision.

Philemon Ogbonna, the commissioner for environment, disclosed this in a statement released on Saturday.

Ogbonna said Styrofoam has been banned as a food container in the state immediately.

Noting that the foil has been banned in other states, including Lagos, he urged Abia residents to stop using styrofoam for food packages until investigations are fully carried out on the product’s dangers to public health.

In related news, the state government arrested and prosecuted some defaulters during the January 2024 Clean Up exercise on Saturday.

The defaulters were arrested at different locations in the state for engaging in trading and other activities during environmental sanitation hours in contravention of the government’s earlier orders.
