Highlights of creative industry in Tinubu’s first year

The burden of reform: Who pays the price in Nigeria?

As President Bola Tinubu’s administration marks one year in office, the Office of the Special Assistant to the President on Digital and Creative Economy has released a list of achievements that underscore the government’s commitment to nurturing the creative industry.

One of the accomplishments is the launch of the Providus Bank’s N5 billion funding initiative for the creative and film industry, aimed at supporting Nigerian actors and producers. This project, which kicked off in December 2023, has already begun disbursing funds to beneficiaries as of May 2024.

In addition, the government has also extended a helping hand to fashion entrepreneurs, providing N2-5 million per business for startups in Enugu and Jigawa states. This initiative, which commenced disbursement in May 2024, has empowered fashion trainees who have completed their training programs, enabling them to take their businesses to the next level.

Furthermore, the administration has secured a significant $3 million international investment for training in the creative industry in partnership with French companies. This collaboration aims to enhance the skills of Nigerian creatives, equipping them to compete on the global stage.

The NaijabrandChick Trade Fair has also received a boost, with an investment of N1 million per business for three businesses that showcase culture and creativity on digital platforms. This initiative, which commenced disbursement in May 2024, has provided a much-needed capital injection for these innovative enterprises.

The federal government’s commitment to talent development in the creative sector is evident in various training programs. In the Northwest region, 10,000 beneficiaries have received film production training, with a larger goal of training 60,000 individuals across the six geopolitical zones.

Up to 1,000 individuals have participated in fashion business training in Enugu and Jigawa states. Those who complete the training will be eligible for employment with international brands, providing a valuable opportunity for career advancement.

The National Design and Innovation Competition, open to 1 million individuals across Nigeria, has also been launched. The top trainees will receive N5 million seed funding, providing a platform for innovative ideas to flourish.

These achievements demonstrate a resolve to foster a vibrant, creative economy, empowering Nigerian talent to shine on the global stage.
