UI, Lady Mechanic Academy Sign MoU to Award Diploma Certificate

As part of efforts to boost females’ human capacity development in the auto industry, the Consultancy Services Unit of the University of Ibadan has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Lady Mechanic Academy.

Adebanjo Eniolorunfe, of the University of Ibadan, Consultancy Services Unit (CSU) and Sandra Aguebor, founder/chief executive officer of the Lady Mechanic Initiative, signed the MoU at the weekend in Benin City.

Eniolorunfe said with the MoU, the Lady Mechanic Academy in affiliation with the University Consultancy Services Unit, would be awarding diploma certificates.

According to him, the University of Ibadan, Consultancy Services Unit (CSU) will be commencing professional diploma in automobile technology with lady mechanic academy.

“We are in affiliation with Lady Mechanic Academy. The Lady Mechanic has achieved lofty heights in Africa.

“It has achieved so much in terms of producing quality technicians over the years and now we want to enhance the professionalism as well as quality education delivery through the University consultancy services unit,” he said.

Commending the university for the MoU, Aguebor, who had earlier been bestowed with the “Distinguished Personality Award” by West African Students Union Parliament (WASUP) for the remarkable feats in empowering underprivileged women in Benin City said there are over 2000 female mechanic in Nigeria.

Aguebor, who said majority of those trained by the Lady Mechanic had since got employment in foreign companies located in Lagos and Port Harcourt noted that the MoU will not only boost the human capital development of female mechanic but will galvanize them out of poverty.

She said over 250 females were trained on auto mechanic in Edo State under the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration while Coca-Cola company trained others.

She however commended the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki for making it possible for the lady mechanic to take over government vehicles for maintenance and repair.

She also commended the state government for creating an enabling environment for the organization to thrive in the state.

Speaking during the award ceremony, the Deputy Speaker of the West African Students Union Parliament, Kubei Kosa, noted that the awardee had proven herself to be a woman of charisma who takes risk to be successful in what she believes in.

Kosa explained that the parliament honoured her in recognition of her contribution to societal development, exemplary leadership to underprivileged women in Nigeria and diligent work in nation building.

He however, called on all relevant authorities to take a bold step in curtailing the ugly trends currently ravaging Africa.
