Christ the King College, a Catholic Mission Secondary School in Gwagwalada, Abuja, recorded an astonishing score rate at the just concluded Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) with 90 per cent of its students scoring 200 and above.
The school enrolled 126 students for the tertiary institution entrance examination which commenced on Friday, April 19 to Monday, April 29, 2024.
Out of the 126 candidates, 37 (29.4 per cent) scored 300+, six students (4.8 per cent) scored between 290 – 299, and 17 (13.5 per cent) made between 270 to 289.
Not fewer than 23 students (18.3 per cent) scored between 250 – 269, the number of students that scored between 200 – 249 was 30 (24 per cent), and only four candidates (3.17 per cent) scored below 200.
Chukka Fortune and Oguejiofor Michael scored 338 respectively, achieving the highest score among the 126 students. Ojiako Julian scored 332, while Ayalugo Chiemerie had 329.
Oguejiofor had earlier won the first runner-up position at the national I.Q English/Mathematics Competition (Senior Category).
He also led the team of four students who represented the FCT in the National JETS competition from November 15 -22, 2023.
Due to his excellent performance, FCT became the best overall in the 2023 edition of the competition.
Oguejiofor was awarded a university scholarship by the Federal Ministry of Education for his feat and the medals and trophies he won.
He was among the four best-performing students in Nigeria who the Japanese Government invited to participate in the Sakura High School Science Programme which was held from April 13-20, 2024. He was selected as the Nigerian delegate team leader being the best among them.
Elih Kamsi, Isiogu Tochukwu, and Oguzie Chukwudi all recorded a 320 score at the UTME. Besides, the students performed excellently well in most of the subjects they sat in the UTME.
The subjects with the highest scores have Physics leading the pack with 95 marks, followed by Chemistry with 94 marks; Mathematics is third with 93 marks, while Economics is the fourth highest scored subject with 89 marks.
Others are Government with 83, Biology with 80, English language had 76, Accounts with 75, and Literature with 73. Surprisingly Christian Religious Studies was the lowest-scored subject with 57 marks.
Mark Iwu, a clergyman and the principal of the school told BusinessDay that what stood the students out among their equals is foundational to the method of imparting knowledge adopted by the college.
“We have the pedagogy of presence, and our leadership style is prophetic-servant, it is a life of service, educating the children, and also we give the values. We are concerned about our environment of learning to ensure that its conducive to inculcating knowledge,” he said.
