Contemporary, Eclectic, and Passionate – The Coronation Art Gallery Collection

Contemporary, Eclectic, and Passionate – The Coronation Art Gallery Collection

Art collecting and patronage are equally as historical as art itself. Art collectors are instrumental in shaping contemporary art history because of their unique decisions and thoughtful connections with other art enthusiasts. Private collectors observe the industry trends and oftentimes spark a craze for them.

Art is created to be seen. Art is also created to change our ways of seeing them. As a collector, it is in your best advantage for your private collection to be made available to the public. And by public, we refer not to your family and friends, but to the general public. Others should appreciate an art collection beyond a close circle of family members and friends.

As a seasoned collector, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede understands this construct so well that he has availed his private collection for public display and consumption at the newly opened Coronation Art Gallery on 10, Amodu Ojukutu street, Victoria Island, Lagos.

It was a sublime evening at the launch of Coronation Art Gallery on May 13, 2022. Not only was this a great show of art and a meeting of notable collectors and industry stakeholders, it was also a bold statement on Aigboje and Coronation’s part.

Most people today know Aigboje for his excellence as an investor, banker, philanthropist and leader in African financial markets. However, he has had great love for art since the age of 5. His mother was a curator and gallerist and his father, an intellectual and pivotal civil servant in the cultural ministry during Nigeria’s post independence era. His immersive experience in the world of art will not be complete without mentioning his personal engagements with the late Ben Enwonwu MBE, Aina Onabolu, Yusuf Grillo, and El Anatsui to mention a few.

Aigboje is committed to sharing the art exposure he has enjoyed all his life with the public through curated exhibitions at the Coronation Art Gallery. Both Aigboje and Coronation pledges to create a legacy through their investment in celebrating, developing, and in the appreciation of African art and artists for generations to come.

Art Index Top 5
From diligent study of Coronation Art Gallery’s collection, Art Index Africa’s jury handpicks its top 5 from the body of works under the gallery’s management. This selection was made based on strong technique, message, style, and medium.

In no particular order, we hope you bask in their grandeur.

Artist: Manyaku Mashilo |Title: The Bride and the House of Unfinished Dreams | Country: South Africa | Medium: Acrylic and ink on canvas | Dimension: 60 X 72 inches | Year: 2021

The bride and the house of unfinished dreams by Manyaku conveys a feeling of hope and uncertainty, evident by the white background and sudden contrasting black foreground which ushers in positive expectations. The use of colours show high level of control and harmony.

Artist: Otis Kwame Kye Quaicoe |Title: Rancher | Country: Ghana | Medium: Print on paper |
Dimension: 36” x 24” | Year: 2020

Otis Kwame Rancher simply evokes the richness of a green field, overlapped by a vibrant skyline, but the facial expression of the figure is rather mixed with doubt and suspense.

Artist: Peju Alatise | Title: Sticks | Country: South Africa | Medium: Metal, stone casts and acrylic paint | Dimension: 70” x 92” | Year: 2017

Peju’s use of patterns and symbols are simply constructive, you can almost feel the images are moving, swaying left and right even as stick-ly as they appear.

Artist: Oluwole Omofemi |Title: Inspiration | Country: Nigeria | Medium:Oil on canvas |
Dimension: 48” x 60” | Year: 2020

Inspiration by Oluwole depicts communication in a somewhat spiritual realm. The closely held hands invokes union and trust. The represented superhuman figure appears to be the source of inspiration and belief.

Artist: Daniel Onguene | Title: The Warrior | Country: Cameroon | Medium: Oil on canvas |
Dimension: 48” x 40” | Year: 2021

Daniel’s warrior piece conveys an atmosphere of determination and ruggedness. The character is unstoppable in his sheer drive to provide for his dependent who have put their trust on him. The somewhat modern architecture in the background is a sign of authority possibly in a position to influence the outcome of this self imposed warrior.

Like Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede and Coronation, collectors are encouraged to follow suit in making it a habit to avail their private collections for public consumption. Not only is it good for social, cultural, historical and political impact in society, it also positions the collector as an enabler in the industry and increases their collection’s value.
