Sikirat Shehu, who manages Kwara State office of both BusinessDay and BDSUNDAY titles, has emerged best female journalist of the year 2017 among the crop of female journalists representing various media organisations in the North Central state.

Shehu emerged winner of the Kwara State Media Awards sponsored by the Kwara State Internal Revenue Service (OGIRS) alongside Hakeem Garuba of Channels Television, who won best journalist of the year (male category). Lawal Sulyman Bamidele of Kwara State Ministry of Information was adjudged best media officer in public service.

Senator Bukola Saraki-owned Kwara-based National Pilot Newspaper received best print media of the year and Kwara state-owned Kwara State Broadcasting Corporation, popularly called Radio Kwara won the best electronic media of the year.

Shehu, who joined BusinessDay Media Group in 2016 as the Kwara state correspondent, read Mass Communication at the National Diploma level at the College of Arabic and Islamic Legal Studies in Ilorin, Kwara State and also a graduate of Mass Communication of the University of Maiduguri, Borno State.

She has worked briefly as a reporter at both The Herald Newspapers and Daily Trust Newspapers in Ilorin, Kwara State before joining BusinessDay.

While presenting the award in Ilorin, Kwara State capital recently, Muritala Awodun, chairman of Kwara State Internal Revenue Service  (KWIRS), said: “We thank God and all, for your corporations that have made it possible for us to be able to complete the first two years of our services.

“This is the beginning of another period called ‘the Growth of KWIRS’ and it starts this January 2018. But beyond the appreciation, we also feel that we should not appreciate by words of mouth, and that is why this event is taking place and it based on different categories of awards as a mark of our appreciation for various categories of media people identified with KWIRS.”

Receiving the award as the best female journalist of the year, Shehu described it as a great surprise as she expressed gratitude to the chairman and management of Kwara State Internal Revenue Service (KWIRS), just as she assured Kwara State government and KWIRS of BusinessDay Media Group’s support at all times in terms of quality and accurate reports.
