OpenAI launches new AI agent to speed up research

OpenAI has launched Deep Research, its new AI agent tool, to conduct time-consuming online research for users about everything, from math sums to complex recommendations.

Deep Research is OpenAI’s second AI agent released this year. Two weeks ago, OpenAI introduced Operator, which can perform assistant-like functions like booking flights, planning grocery orders, and even completing orders.

“Deep research is a specialised AI capability designed to perform in-depth, multi-step research using data on the public web,” Open AI said.

“It’s fine-tuned on the upcoming OpenAI o3 reasoning model and can autonomously search for and read information from diverse online sources.”

In response to a prompt, the tool will scour words, images, PDFs online, and files uploaded by the user to create an in-depth report.

Both services are initially available to those who pay $200 monthly for OpenAI’s recently introduced ChatGPT Pro option. According to OpenAI, the research tool is “very compute intensive,” as users will only be able to submit 100 queries per month.

OpenAI plans to eventually offer the service to other paying customers, including those who subscribe to its plus, team, and enterprise options, but the company did not provide a timetable for doing so.

Sam Altman, chief executive officer of OpenAI, has previously said agents will be “the next giant breakthrough” for AI.

Experts believe that the rollout of AI agents is part of a broader industry push toward agents or AI software that can complete multi-step tasks for users with minimal supervision.
