Nigeria is looking to partner with Google for the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital innovation.
This was revealed on President Bola Tinubu’s X handle, speaking on his meet with Sundar Pichai, chief executive officer of Google and Alphabet in Paris, France.
He said, “We are exploring partnership opportunities with Google, which will focus on five key areas, enhancing scalable cloud infrastructure, equipping our workforce with essential skills for the future, promoting AI innovation and research, driving cloud adoption, and elevating Nigeria’s standing in the global tech landscape as a hub for innovation and AI transition.”
He noted that Nigeria already has prospects in AI like Silas Adekunle’s Awarri, a startup currently collaborating to build critical AI software infrastructure to meet the needs of the local market unique to arts and culture, languages, and society, amongst others. He noted that not many models have focused on the arts and culture segment of AI development.
Pichai added, “We talked about the immense potential of AI in Nigeria, and how we can partner to expand AI skills, enable innovation, and support Nigeria’s growing tech ecosystem.”
Bosun Tijani, Nigeria’s minster of Communications and Digital Economy, has also noted that the country needs to play a prominent role in AI development and regulation with a strategy.
“In a short while, there will be a convergence of AI systems, so Nigeria should be part of that global superpower in the development and regulation of AI,” he said.
