How LG’s social contribution is benefiting communities world over

businessday-icon

Looking around communities in most developing world nations, it is apparent that they need intervention regarding infrastructure, health, education and financial empowerment. More than ever there is the need for corporate bodies to come up with Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives that will empower people living in the communities they operate in.

Although these projects will not solve their entire problems, it will no doubt go a long way in ameliorating the distresses of people living in these communities. In our socially-connected era of heightened public scrutiny, corporations that want to prosper must win over the general public with actions rather than mere words and savvy marketing techniques.

These days, it takes much more than a fake smile and ad hoc good deeds here and there to earn the allegiance of potential customers. A company’s public perception therefore is extremely important and first impressions can really last forever.

In keeping with LG’s overriding philosophy, CSR must be approached in a manner that both takes advantage of and furthers the profile of LG technologies and products. To meet this goal, LGE has established and implemented four distinct strategic approaches: CSR Change Management, CSR Risk Management, Stakeholder Engagement, and Strategic Social Contribution.

From the start with product R&D all the way through production, sales, purchase, and continuing with after sales service, LGE strives to improve its CSR execution while strengthening efforts to build consensus and partnership with stakeholders. Malaria is one of the most serious problems facing the world today. The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that over 300 million new cases of malaria arises a year, with 2-3 million deaths resulting from contraction.

In Nigeria, malaria is a massive health problem as the available methods of mosquitoes control all have some inconvenience in one form or another. The need for a formidable way of combating mosquitoes is on the increase. Nauseatingly, this malady affects the morbidity and mortality rates as well as the national economy. In order to support the local communities’ fight against malaria, LG Electronics introduced the “Mosquito Away” Air Conditioner.

The LG Mosquito Away Air Conditioner repels mosquitoes which are the carriers of the malaria parasite. The AC emits ultrasonic waves that repel mosquitoes. This technology is completely harmless to humans.

The effectiveness of the product was certificated by the University of Ibadan College Of Medicine, and the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON).

The successful Mosquito Away AC comes with all the advantages of LG’s advanced air conditioning technologies, such as powerful cooling and dependable operation in extreme temperatures in the process offering true comfort to users.

LG Electronics donated units of Mosquito Away AC as well as malaria medicine and mosquito nets to provide further protection against mosquitoes in communities. So far, this ground-breaking product has been donated to institutions in Nigeria, one of which is Ojokoro Primary Health Centre in Ifako Ijaiye LCDA in Lagos.

Speaking at the occasion, Junhwa Jeong, general manager, Air Conditioning and Energy Solutions, LG Electronics West Africa operations, said: “Over time, we have remained competitive while improving sustainability; we have enabled investment and innovation required to deploy new technologies and to safely and responsibly develop progressive products.”

Speaking further, he said: “we trust that the Mosquito Away Air Conditioning units as well as the treated mosquito nets we are donating today will improve health care and further push back the scourge of malaria which has been pronounced to be the biggest killer of pregnant women and children under the age of 5 in Nigeria.”

Over the years, LG Electronics has constantly marked the World Environment Day (WED) with a tree planting activity; this has not gone unnoticed given by the fact that in recognition of its pioneering work in the area of tree-planting and environmental protection initiatives, the company was, in 2012, honoured as the corporate organization with the best nurtured trees by the Lagos State government.

The award was presented to LG Electronics by Governor Raji Fashola at an elaborate tree planting event in Lagos. Also recently, the company commemorated the WED by embarking on a beach cleaning exercise. Showing its commitment to issues that affect the environment, staff of LG Electronics Nigeria came out in their numbers to clean up an expansive beach in Epe, a Lagos suburb.

Also, the annual scholarship grants to deserving students of the Engineering Department of the University of Lagos which is in its fourth year is holding later this year; This is indeed another great way in which the company improves society.

LG has a track record of producing eco-friendly products that help users cut down on their energy consumption. By reducing the energy consumed, these products not only save consumers money in the long run through lower energy bills, but the decrease in power demanded helps eliminate pollution as well.

LG refrigerators featuring the Inverter Linear Compressor have been recognised for their energy saving capabilities and quiet performance. The company’s refrigerators achieved excellent results in tests carried out by the Association for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies (VDE), one of Europe’s largest and most respected scientific and technical associations. Employing industry-first technology, the Inverter Linear Compressor enables LG’s fridges to work efficiently, effectively and silently.
