Apple unveils Apple intelligence, partners with Open AI

Apple has just unveiled its Artificial Intelligence feature, Apple Intelligence, among other new features.

This revelation was made at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024, the firm’s annual meet for developers worldwide.

“We’re thrilled to introduce a new chapter in Apple innovation. Apple Intelligence will transform what users can do with our products – and what our products can do for our users,” said Tim Cook, Apple chief executive officer.

“All of this goes beyond artificial intelligence, it’s personal Intelligence, and it is the next big step for Apple,” he added.

According to the firm, the upgrade will also include an overhaul of the virtual assistant Siri, which will be capable of many more tasks with the help of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Siri’s optional gateway to ChatGPT will be free to all iPhone users and made available on other Apple products once the option is integrated.

The firm further noted that it would stand out from other AI companies by putting privacy “at the core” of AI.

“Apple Intelligence puts AI models right at the core of your iPhone, iPad and Mac and protects your privacy at every step,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering.

According to Federighi, Apple Intelligence is built with on-device data processing, so that user information isn’t sent to third-party cloud databases. “It is aware of your personal data without collecting your personal data,” he said.

Sam Altman, OpenAI CEO said in a social media post that he was “very happy” to be partnering with Apple to integrate ChatGPT into its products.

Apple Intelligence when integrated will also enable users to create their own emojis based on a description in everyday language or to generate brief summaries of e-mails in the mailbox. Users will also be sble to make their requests to Siri in writing or orally.

These upgrades will be available for free in Apple’s iOS 18 operating system, to be released later in the year. However, the full suite of features will only work on more recent models of the iPhone, iPad and Macbook.
