Ugandan authorities have launched an investigation into the death of Nigerian footballer Abubakar Lawal, who allegedly fell from a shopping mall in Kampala under unclear circumstances.
The 29-year-old striker, who played for Vipers SC, reportedly fell from a third-floor balcony at Voicemall Shopping Arcade, where he had visited a Tanzanian friend, Omary Naima. Lawal was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead, police confirmed, according to BBC.
Circumstances Surrounding Lawal’s Death Remain Unclear
According to police reports, Naima had left Lawal alone in her room, which is part of the shopping mall building, while he was preparing tea before the tragic incident occurred.
However, conflicting reports have emerged regarding Lawal’s cause of death. Some local media outlets initially claimed he had died in a motorcycle accident, adding further mystery to the case.

In response, Nigerian football star Ahmed Musa called for an official investigation, stating.
“Lawal’s soul deserves a thorough investigation, and justice must be served if anyone is found guilty.”
Ugandan police have assured the public that they are retrieving CCTV footage and conducting interrogations to determine the exact events leading up to Lawal’s death.
“Authorities are retrieving CCTV footage and conducting thorough interrogations to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses,” police said in a statement.
Vipers SC, Fellow Players Pay Tribute
Lawal, who had been with Vipers SC since July 2022, helped the club win the league and cup double in 2023. The club expressed its deep sadness over his passing.
“Lawal (Man from Sokoto) was a unique person. He had a big heart of gold. He really cared about people and went out of his way to help. He was incredibly generous.”
His former Nigerian club, Nasarawa United, also pay tribute
“We mourn the sudden demise of our ex-player Abubakar Lawal earlier today. May God grant him eternal rest.”
Ugandan footballer Mustafa Kizza shared his sorrow
“It’s hard to take in that you’re no more, Lawal. A kind, talented, jolly, and loving person you have been. You will forever be missed, bro.”
With the investigation still ongoing, authorities have retrieved Lawal’s belongings, including two smartphones, shoes, headsets, and a training kit, as they work to piece together the circumstances surrounding his mysterious and tragic death.
