Team Nigeria capped off an impressive campaign at the 24th CAA Africa Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, with a commanding victory in the women’s 4x400m relay on Sunday night.
The Nigerian quartet of Esther Okon, Toheebat Jimoh, Jecinter Lawrence and veteran Patient Okon-George delivered a dominant performance at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, clocking 3:29.25 to secure the country’s fourth gold medal of the championships.
Nigeria controlled the race from start to finish and crossed the line with a huge advantage over the rest of the field.
Anchored by the experienced Patient Okon-George, Team Nigeria finished nearly 30 metres ahead of their closest challengers, with Ethiopia claiming silver and Kenya taking bronze.
The relay triumph brought Nigeria’s medal tally at the championships to 12 medals overall, four gold, eight silver, and one bronze.
The victory also reinforced Nigeria’s reputation as one of Africa’s dominant forces in quarter-mile relay events as attention gradually shifts towards upcoming global competitions.
