The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has named a 45-athlete squad for the upcoming CAA Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, with several of the nation’s top stars expected to lead Nigeria’s medal hunt.
The squad comprises 25 female and 20 male athletes, blending experienced internationals with emerging talents as Nigeria targets a strong performance on the continental stage.
Leading Team Nigeria is world record holder Tobi Amusan, who headlines the women’s team alongside sprint sensation Rosemary Chukwuma, one of the fastest female athletes this season.
Amusan is expected to compete in the women’s 100m hurdles alongside Adaobi Tabugbo and Janet Sunday.
Chukwuma will feature in both the women’s 100m and the 4x100m relay team alongside Miracle Ezechukwu, Maria Thompson Omokwe and Tejiri Ugoh.
The women’s squad also includes experienced quarter-miler Patience Okon George, long jump star Ruth Usoro and hammer throw specialist Oyesade Olatoye.
On the men’s side, sprint star Favour Ashe and Africa’s leading shot put athlete Chukwuebuka Enekwechi will spearhead Nigeria’s campaign.
The sprint lineup also features Enoch Adegoke, Usheoritse Itsekiri and Chidera Ezakor.
Nigeria’s men’s 400m and relay teams will be anchored by Samson Nathaniel, Emmanuel Ojeli and Chidi Okezie.
In the field events, Nigeria will also parade athletes such as Romeo Bernard, Emmanuel Audu and javelin thrower Adams Samuel Kure.
The championships in Accra are expected to provide a major test for Team Nigeria as athletes continue preparations for future international competitions, including the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
With a squad packed with experience, speed and emerging talent, expectations remain high for Nigeria to challenge strongly among Africa’s athletics elite.
