Lionel Messi has reportedly acquired Spanish fifth-tier side UE Cornellà, further strengthening his ties to Catalonia.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, who currently plays for Inter Miami, is also expected to play a central role in Argentina’s bid to defend their World Cup title later this year.

In a statement confirming the takeover, the Barcelona-based club said: “This move reinforces Messi’s close ties to Barcelona and his commitment to the development of sport and local talent in Catalonia.”
Cornellà, based in the suburbs of Barcelona, has produced several notable players, including David Raya and Messi’s former FC Barcelona teammate Jordi Alba. The club, however, has endured back-to-back relegations in the past two seasons.
“Leo Messi’s arrival marks the beginning of a new chapter in the club’s history, aimed at driving both sporting and institutional growth,” the statement added.
“The project is guided by a long-term vision that combines ambition, sustainability and a strong connection to its local roots.”
Messi rose through Barcelona’s famed academy before spending 17 seasons with the first team, becoming the club’s all-time leading scorer with 672 goals.
The 38-year-old has previously indicated he plans to return to live in Catalonia after retiring from professional football.
He is set to feature at his sixth World Cup when Argentina begin their title defence in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Meanwhile, Messi’s long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo recently acquired a 25 per cent stake in Spanish second-tier side UD Almería, highlighting a growing trend of elite players investing in club ownership.
