Wolves cruised into the FA Cup fifth round with two quick-fire goals sealing a 2-0 victory over Blackburn on Sunday. The Premier League side comfortably avoided an upset against the Championship promotion contenders at Ewood Park.
While Wolves’ main focus is avoiding Premier League relegation, sitting just two points above the drop zone, they remain in contention for a deep FA Cup run. They haven’t reached the final since winning the competition in 1960.
Wolves took the lead in the 33rd minute after Todd Cantwell lost possession, allowing Joao Gomes to pounce in the Blackburn area. Gomes’s shot lacked power, but Blackburn keeper Balazs Toth mishandled the save, allowing the ball to squirm into the net.
Less than a minute later, Wolves doubled their advantage. Nelson Semedo’s pass sent Matheus Cunha clear, and the Brazilian forward’s powerful strike flew into the far corner.
Later on Sunday, Liverpool were expected to continue their pursuit of a quadruple when they travelled to Championship side Plymouth. The Reds recently secured their place in the League Cup final against Newcastle and are also six points clear at the top of the Premier League with a game in hand, and have reached the Champions League round of 16.
Under-pressure Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou, who previously boasted about winning a trophy in his second season, can’t afford another cup exit when his team visits Aston Villa in Sunday’s other match.
A loss to Villa would significantly diminish Postecoglou’s chances of fulfilling his trophy prediction.
