Victor Osimhen found the net for Galatasaray, but his goal was not enough as the Yellow-Reds suffered a 2-1 defeat to Ajax in their final Europa League group-stage match.
The Turkish champions, previously unbeaten in Europe’s top ten leagues alongside Juventus, were looking to extend their winning streak at the Johan Cruijff Arena. Osimhen, fresh off scoring in three consecutive games, led the attack alongside former Napoli teammate Dries Mertens.
Despite dominating the first half, Galatasaray failed to capitalise on several chances. Osimhen’s best opportunity came in the 18th minute when he connected with a cross from Baris Alper Yilmaz but failed to convert. Substitute Michy Batshuayi also missed a golden opportunity in the second half.
Ajax’s disciplined defence and clinical finishing proved decisive. The match also saw 41-year-old goalkeeper Remko Pasveer wear the captain’s armband instead of Jordan Henderson, sparking speculation about the English midfielder’s future at the club.
Galatasaray finally pulled one back in stoppage time when Osimhen showed his poacher’s instinct, pouncing on a rebound to slot home. Despite having 26 shots, only one found the net, with Osimhen recording nine attempts.
The defeat marked Galatasaray’s first loss since August, as they finished 14th in the group stage, while Ajax secured 12th place. Both teams will now shift their focus to the next phase of the competition.
