Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha has become one of the breakout stars of the FIFA 2026 World Cup, with his Instagram following reportedly soaring from fewer than 50,000 to more than 9.4 million after his heroic display against Spain.
The 40-year-old shot to global prominence following Cape Verde’s stunning 0-0 draw with tournament favourites Spain in Atlanta, a result widely regarded as one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history.
Vozinha was at the heart of the shock result, producing a series of outstanding saves to frustrate the 2010 world champions and help the Blue Sharks earn their first-ever World Cup point.

World Cup heroics spark social media explosion
Before the match, the veteran goalkeeper had just under 50,000 followers on Instagram.
Within hours of his performance against Spain, his social media presence exploded, turning him into one of the tournament’s most talked-about figures.
Vozinha made seven saves during the match and became the oldest goalkeeper in World Cup history to keep a clean sheet on his tournament debut.
The only goalkeeper over the age of 40 to record more saves in a World Cup match remains Northern Ireland legend Pat Jennings, who made 10 stops against Brazil in 1986.

From football obscurity to global fame
The remarkable surge in popularity has shone a spotlight on Cape Verde, the Atlantic island nation of around 500,000 people that is making its first appearance at a World Cup.
The Blue Sharks are the third-smallest country by population ever to qualify for football’s biggest tournament, behind only Curacao and Iceland.
Speaking about his newfound fame, Vozinha admitted he was stunned by the attention.
“That is unpredictable; I didn’t expect that,” he told the Men in Blazers podcast.
“Things run fast on Instagram, but I didn’t believe it. I still don’t believe, but it is what it is. Thank you to everyone.”
His online following now exceeds that of most players at the World Cup and trails only a handful of England stars, including Jude Bellingham, Marcus Rashford, Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice.
Veteran goalkeeper enjoying a remarkable late-career moment
Born in Mindelo, Cape Verde, Vozinha began his professional career relatively late, joining local club Batuque at the age of 25 in 2007.
Since then, he has played in Portugal, Angola, Moldova, Cyprus and Slovakia, forging a reputation as a dependable goalkeeper away from football’s global spotlight.
The veteran currently plays for Portuguese second-tier side Chaves and is Cape Verde’s second-most capped player behind captain Ryan Mendes.
Since making his international debut in 2012, Vozinha has earned 89 caps for the Blue Sharks.
Now, thanks to one unforgettable night against Spain, the goalkeeper who once played in relative obscurity has become a global football sensation almost overnight.
